Ashley turned her eyes to the direction Emily pointed to and stifled a laugh, covering her mouth with her hand. “Haha. Nah, I’ve never seen that one before. Back in Chicago, watching people is never fun…” She smiled sadly, remembering her high school life back home. She had some good memories there and hoped the ones here in New York would be able to live up to her expectations. She turned back to Emily, still watching and thought, Maybe they will. She smiled again.
Emily turns back to Ashley, smiling and trying to imagine what it’ll be like outside that window, once they get out there. In these cocktail dresses, it’ll make them seem like they’re going to the show or the Opera, or maybe the Phantom of the Opera, because that’s an amazing show, as is Love Never Dies. It’s Ashley’s fault she loves musicals, they’re her passion and Emily just had to get caught up in them. “I mean, it’s NYC, there’s people everywhere, with so many people and so many different stories. It’s really beautiful, to tell you the truth, how much you can see here. I mean, I should give you a tour of the place sometime, with the places you can see and the small shops only locals know… I’ve been here since I was 16, so it’s like home now, the bustling city, not the Highgate at the edge…” Emily feels she shouldn’t have shared that much about how insecure she is about Highgate, but she does anyways. What’s there to hide from Ashley?
Then, then there’s Ashley. Emily’s best friend. The girl who swears will never leave. And Emily’s kind of buying it, hoping its true, because she can’t take much more rejection in her life.
But sometimes she finds herself dwelling on her past too much lately and not thinking of the wonderful things she and Ash can do in the future, even though she wants to move on, she can’t, knowing Sam could show up or Jim could march back into her life again. And she hates it do much.
Ashley chuckles at the memories as she remembered her parents talking about their time at Highgate. They met at Highgate, fell for each other and are married now. Her mom is a famous broadway star and her dad a musician, and also have control over magic. “And you finally get to do it,” Ashley gave her a little hug “That’s great!” She got out of the car, trailing Emily up to their table. Ashley smiles, “It’s perfect.”
“I’d had hopes that it’d be good, you know, people watching is the best sport of all the sports, and where better than Time’s Square, center of the universe?” Emily giggles at herself for a moment, then turns to look out the window. “You ever seen that one?” she points at the people dressed up in their costumes for Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
Ashley laughed at the dare and story. “Haha! Em, I actually don’t have your socks. They’re lost forever…” She thought about Emily’s choice of venue for her party, and well, Ashley wanted to give her a huge present. “So… have you already planned the party then?” She asked.
Emily smiles a small bit. “I’ve planned some of it. It’ll be up at the top of Rockefeller. I’ve got some friends in high up places there, former Highgaters that my mom and dad knew, so maybe at the observation deck, I don’t know. It’s something I wanted to do as a kid…” the car pulls to a stop, and both Emily and Ashley exit. The heart of Times’ Square sits across from the restaurant.
They enter the place, and are immediately taken to the third floor, where their table sits, overlooking the crowds of the Square, from tourists to locals. She smiles at Ashley, “This okay?”
